“Zac, I need you to stay a little later then usual today. Ramie had to take the day off because his sons in hospital,” Derek declared. I shoved a few empty boxes onto a side and sighed.
“I dunno. Catherine called and told him that he had to come home asap. Something about the kid swallowing a marble.” I rolled my eyes and stood up, brushing myself off.
“What time do you need me here until?”
“No later then seven.” I nodded my head and picked up three shoeboxes, making sure they were the right sizes before pushing the door open and walking back into the store.
“Size six brown Cat boots, size three pink pumps and…” I announced to the small crowd, “size two Killah sandals.” I placed the boxes onto the counter and sat down on one of the bright pink chairs, bringing my phone out. I dialled Kate’s number and listened to the ringing.
“Hey baby, how come it took you so long to pick up?” I questioned, a smile playing on my lips as I heard her sweet laughter fill my ears.
“I’m sorry baby, I’m on my way to the airport, and I didn’t hear my phone ring.”
“I told you I was going to pick up my niece last night. Don’t you listen, Zac?” she asked. I shrugged to myself.
“Listen, I gotta stay a little later today,” I stated, watching as a rush of new costumers came through the door.
“I’ll be home no later then seven, ok?”
“Ok. Zac, the signals about to go. I love you.” She stated.
“I love you too.” I snapped my phone shut and stuffed it into my pocket before walking over to an old lady that looked like she was having difficulty with a shoe.
“Why don’t you let me help you with that?” I smiled.
I slammed the door shut behind me and welcomed the sweet smell of home mixed with freshly made cookies that I discovered a few seconds later, where laying on the kitchen counter; just waiting to be scoffed.
“Zachary Walker, don’t you dare touch those cookies!” I heard a stern voice come from behind me. I blushed and put my arms up in surrender and turned round to face Kate. I gave her the cheesiest grin I could get off with and she shoved me playfully.
“How was your day?” I asked, pulling Kate in for a kiss. She brushed me off and took my hand instead, leading me into the den.
“Oh, feisty today, aren’t we..?” I stopped mid-sentence as someone cleared their throat.
“Zac, this is my niece Holly. Holly this is my boyfriend, Zac” Kate announced. I stepped forward to give her my hand and a quarter of a second later I was face forward on the floor, my head nestled on a pair of purple looking converse all stars. Holly jumped back slightly, taking her shoes, and may I add, my pillow away with her.
“Ouch,” I mumbled, sitting up and rubbing my head. Kate blushed and offered me her hands, which I took gratefully.
“Nice to meet you.” I mumbled.
“Me or my shoes?” Holly smiled. I rolled my eyes and sat myself down on the sofa.
“Holly’s staying with us over the weekend, she’s here to visit her mom and dad and I asked her to stop by for the night so we could catch up.” Kate stated, seating herself down next to me.
“Great. Consequently, I have tomorrow off. Where did you fly in from, Holly?” I asked.
“Sweet! Any ideas of what you ladies wanna do tomorrow?”
“We were actually hoping to have the day to ourselves.” Kate laughed. I pouted and crossed my hands over my chest.
” Zac, we were going to go shopping. I’m sure Holly doesn’t want to have you mopping around with us because your feet hurt and all that nonsense you make up when we go to the mall.” Kate huffed.
“Why don’t we just watch a movie then?” I moaned. Kate looked over at Holly and Holly shrugged.
“I don’t mind, as long as it’s not some sort of gross out porno-filled action movie.” She said. I sighed dramatically and Kate punched me.
“Holly gets to pick the movie, agreed?”
“Oh my god. Zachary Walker are you crying?” Kate squealed. I sunk further down in my seat and shook my head furiously.
“Shut up.” I snapped as Kate and Holly went into a fit of giggles.
“I am not CRYING!” I shouted, catching almost everyone in the theatres attention.
After the movie had finished, I walked up beside Holly and Kate, my head down and my hands deep in my pockets.
“What a sissy..” I heard someone laugh as we walked on by. I hung my head even lower and blushed.
“Was not crying.” I said through gritted teeth, although I don’t think anyone paid much attention to what I had just said.
“I want some candy,” Holly cried out as we walked by a large Candy Shop. “My treat.”
We watched her disappear into the shop, only coming out a good quarter of an hour later.
“Wow, you should have gone in there, it is HUGE.” She giggled, giving both me and Kate one of the three bags she had.
“You got me licorice?” I mumbled, making a sour face. Kate nudged me hard in the ribs and glared at me. I bit a piece off and chewed it, trying not to show my disgust.
“Its not just licorice! Its Twizzler Pull and Peel Licorice!” she announced. I gave her a puzzled look and she sighed.
“You’re weird,” I rolled my eyes back at her and took another bite. “You trip over air, you cry watching A Cinderella Story and you don’t like sweets.”
“I did not trip over air! I tripped over my shoelace! And that movie did not make me cry…I just got a little…upset,” I huffed. “Come on man, the stepmother is a bitch and the cheerleaders where so mean.”
“Zac, baby? You’re digging yourself deeper into your grave.” Kate giggled. I pouted my lips and suddenly winced.
“Ow,” I whispered, touching my lips which where tingling.
“What’s wrong?” Kate smiled. I shrugged her off as we rounded the corner to our flat.
I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and rolled over in bed, facing Kate’s sleeping form. I brushed her hair away from her face, making her stir in her sleep.
“Morning, beautiful,” I whispered as she yawned.
“Morning.” She answered. I smiled down at her as she opened her eyes one by one, the small smile that was playing on her lips a moment ago had disappeared, her eyes wide as she pushed herself up straight.
“Oh my god…” she whispered, covering her mouth.
“What is wrong with your lips?” she laughed, jumping out of bed and coming back with a small hand mirror.
“Erm..what is wrong with my…what the hell?” I yelled, watching my now sore inflated lips take up an unusual amount of space on my face.
“Eww…that is nasty.” Holly pointed out as we arrived at the hospital half an hour later. I touched my lips again and winced.
“Thanks to your- wonderful Twizzler Pull and Peel Licorice!” I mimicked in a high voice. She rolled her eyes and giggled as we got out of the car.
“What a sissy…”
“I did not cry!” I barked.
“Wasn’t talking about that but thanks for reminding me.” She chuckled.
“Holly, leave Zac alone.” Kate mumbled, locking the car doors.
“I had a…unforgettable two days, thanks guys.” Holly smiled over at us. I was about to pout but thought better of it as my lips began to tingle.
“No problem! You’re welcome to come down any time, Holly. Send love to your mom and dad when you get back.” Kate said, taking Holly into her arms for a hug. They parted a few seconds later when Holly’s flight number was called in for its final boarding.
“I’ll see you guys,” she waved before leaning into Kate and whispering, “keep him away from chick flicks, what an embarrassment.” I blushed and turned round, pretending to have not heard.
“Bye Zac. Sorry about your lips!” and with that she gave us another wave and walked off towards her gate. I sighed and ran my hand through my hair.
“Thank God.” I exhaled noisily. Kate glared at me and punched my shoulder.
“Come on, my poor-sore-baby, let’s get you home.” She sniggered, linking her arms into mine.
